Morgan County, Utah
Workman Bridge: LEI was contacted by Mike Parry to assist with the lay-out, design and permitting for the Workman Covered Bridge Project located in Morgan County, Utah.
This is a covered pedestrian bridge on private property with an approximately 62′ span and serves as access from the main road to the property and cabin. The bridge is used by the family members as well as the by youth and church groups visiting the site. LEI provided engineering for the cover and the pedestrian walks on each side of the bridge.
The cover was designed using heavy timer construction. These timbers and their connections were designed to resist both lateral and vertical forces. The design snow load for the area is over 60 pounds per square foot. In addition to the high snow load, the site is in Seismic Design Category D, which is a high seismic risk area. In order to allow more clearance, the connections were designed to resist the moments induced by the lateral loads in both longitudinal and crosswise directions. The design of the details and the connection of the timbers to the steel beams that provide the structural support were coordinated with the general contractor in order to provide the best solution.
